Agricultural workers in Kano State, which is known for its large agricultural sector, are regularly exposed to pesticides used for crop protection. Pesticides, while crucial in preventing crop damage and increasing yields, contain chemicals that pose significant health risks to those who are exposed. Prolonged or improper exposure to these chemicals can lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, skin conditions, neurological damage, and even long-term chronic diseases such as cancer. Despite the importance of pesticides in the agricultural industry, there is limited research on the specific risks faced by agricultural workers in Kano State, where farming practices are heavily reliant on pesticide use. This study aims to investigate the level of pesticide exposure among agricultural workers in Kano State, assess the health impacts, and identify measures to reduce exposure.
In Kano State, agricultural workers are often in close contact with pesticides during planting, spraying, and harvesting. Despite widespread knowledge of the health risks associated with pesticide exposure, many workers lack the protective equipment and training necessary to handle pesticides safely. This results in a high incidence of pesticide-related health issues, which are under-reported due to a lack of awareness and the absence of proper monitoring systems. The problem of pesticide exposure is compounded by insufficient regulation and enforcement of safety standards. This study aims to address the gap in understanding the extent of pesticide exposure and its health implications for agricultural workers in Kano State.
This study will focus on agricultural workers in Kano State, specifically those in the farming and pesticide application sectors. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported health issues and the difficulty of accurately measuring pesticide exposure in the absence of precise monitoring tools.
